Bradlee Higgins had a hand in four event victories Saturday, leading the Heath girls track team to the championship during the Lakewood Invitational.
Higgins crossed in 18.12 seconds to win the 100-meter hurdles, and she won the 300 hurdles (51.98). The Bulldogs totaled 91 points in a tightly contested meet, finishing ahead of Zanesville’s 87, Watkins Memorial’s 82 and Lakewood’s 81.
Higgins joined Annabelle Stephens, Rylinn Mitchell and Jaylynne Boland on the winning 800 relay (1:53.34) and Mitchell, Boland and Adrianne Pethtel on the winning 1,600 relay (4:33.67). Stephens, Mitchell, Boland and Aubrey Bayles won the 400 relay (53.80); and Pethtel, Bayles, Sydney Thompson and Lybertei Nihiser won the 3,200 relay (11:46.46).
Lily Chase added a victory in the discus (97 feet, 3 inches) for Heath.
Avalyn Hines in the 800, Ava Moore in the 1,600 (5:49.87) and Emma Summers in the 3,200 (12:43.43) all won for Watkins.
Double winners for the host Lancers were Jaylie Maas in the 100 (13.25) and high jump (4-8) and Josie Lynch in the 400 (1:06.85) and long jump (15-1).
In the boys meet, Lakewood’s Braylon Brooks won the 400 (53.36). He also joined Troy Martindale, Alex Bowman and Derrick Norwood on the winning 1,600 relay (3:43.51). The Lancers totaled 112 points to take runner-up, trailing Zanesville’s 130.
Other winners for Lakewood were Charlie Haire in the 800 (2:13.97) and William Hennossy in the 3,200 (11:26.07).
Watkins’ Trevor Mettle won the 1,600 (5:09.15), and Micah Anderson won the pole vault (9-9). Jacob Skaggs, Brayden Logue, Kaden Ross and Chael Exel won the 3,200 relay (9:16.58).
Baker takes runner-up
Ryan Baker crossed in a time of 4 minutes, 32.25 seconds to take second in the 1,600-meter run for the Heath boys during the Ray Mitchell Lexington Invitational.
Baker also placed fourth in the 3,200 (9:55.41). Teammates Jaxon Duston tied for third in the high jump (6 feet) and Justice Jones tied for fourth in the pole vault (11-6).
In the girls meet, Johnstown’s Alexis Diehl took runner-up in the shot put (36-8) and placed third in the discus (112-1). Teammate Ava Ruffle took runner-up in the long jump (15-3.25).
Apel wins event
John Apel crossed in a time of 49.08 seconds to win the 400-meter dash for the Watkins Memorial boys during the Stingel Invitational at Pickerington North. Apel also placed third in the 200 (10.77).
In the girls meet, Watkins’ Kate Michael took runner-up in the 800 (2:22.82).
SOFTBALL
Heights sweeps Newark
Licking Heights beat host Newark 7-2 and 10-0.
Lydia Rauch pitched a five-hitter in the first game and recorded two hits and two runs for the Hornets (6-5). Ava Von Bargen added two hits and a run. Hailey Anderson and Savanna Christ had a hit and two RBIs apiece.
Christ, Kelsey Carter and Ali West all homered in the second game as Christ and Carter knocked in three runs apiece. West and Von Bargen combined for five hits and four runs. Natalie Mahoney struck out three in four two-hit innings.
Mallory Back notched two hits and a run; Lauren Queen had a hit and a run; and Lexi Shanaberg a hit and two RBIs for the Wildcats (2-11) in the first game. Lilly Holmes doubled in the second game.
Lakewood wins at home
Jaycie Montie homered and drove in three runs as Lakewood erupted for an 11-1 victory against visiting Fairfield Union.
Briana Hoisington added two hits, including a double, a run and two RBIs. Anna Crist contributed two hits, a run and an RBI for the Lancers (10-1). Averie Adams struck out two in six innings.
Watkins splits
Host Watkins Memorial beat Miamisburg 10-3 before falling 3-1 to Dover.
Marlee Gerhardt tripled and doubled, scored three runs and drove in two for the Warriors (7-3) in the victory. Marissa Weber, Carlie Taggart and Kylie Trouten each doubled, combining for five hits, five runs and four RBIs. Jacy Severance struck out two in four one-hit innings.
Trouten had two hits in the second game. Kendal Tellings allowed two earned runs in six innings.
Johnstown drops road game
Addy Zak hit a two-run home run for Johnstown in a 10-3 loss at Mount Vernon (7-2, 2-2) in Licking County League play.
Riley Stefanick added a hit and a run, while Cam Bollinger chipped in with a hit and an RBI for the Johnnies (2-5, 1-3).
BASEBALL
GCA beats Liberty
Aiden Geiger struck out eight in six four-hit innings, pitching unbeaten Granville Christian to a 12-1 victory against visiting Liberty Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.
Josh Benvie and Bentley Johnson notched a hit, two runs and two RBIs apiece out of the top two spots in the order for the Lions (6-0, 4-0). Matthew Riedel and Josiah Green scored two runs apiece.
Jackson Cecil had a hit and an RBI for the Eagles (0-3, 0-3). Seth Mollohan recorded a run. Mason Kamppi, Luke Mollohan and Dawson Kamppi each notched a hit.
Johnstown wins in eighth
Landon Myers led off the top of the eighth inning with a single and eventually scored on a groundout to give Johnstown a 5-4 victory at Buckeye Valley.
Myers and Sam Marasek recorded two hits apiece with Marasek also scoring a run. Conner Sullivan added a hit and two RBIs, and Carter Holbrook and Braeden Archibald contributed a hit and a run each for the Johnnies (5-1). Marasek threw three scoreless innings of relief.
NC cruises at home
Miller Hutchison struck out nine in five one-hit innings on the mound. At the plate, he recorded three hits, scoring twice and driving in one for Newark Catholic in an 11-1 victory against visiting Strasburg.
Hal Gillespie added a hit, two runs and two RBIs. Owen Przymierski had two hits and an RBI. Mikey Hess and Jaxon Holman recorded two hits and a run each for the Green Wave (5-2).
Lakewood splits
Host Lakewood beat Fairfield Christian 12-2 before falling 5-4 to Fairfield Union.
Jalen White was a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs for the Lancers (4-2) in the victory; and Colton Ferry had three hits, a run and an RBI. Stephen Slocum and Carter Davis added two hits apiece, combining for three runs and three RBIs. Landon Pierce recorded a hit, a run and two RBIs. Pierce also struck out one in 3 ⅔ innings of hitless relief.
White notched two hits, a run and an RBI in the loss, while Carson Anderson added a hit and two runs. Jobe Glaser struck out two and allowed four hits and one run in three innings. Carson Pound added a strikeout in 2 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief.
Valley splits
Licking Valley rebounded to beat host Barnesville 13-7 after falling 9-4 to Olentangy Orange.
Adam West doubled and singled, scored three runs and drove in two in the Panthers' (5-3) victory. Trey McLaughlin added a hit, a run and three RBIs. Zane Hancock and Brandt Lichtenauer had a hit and two RBIs apiece. Brody Rodgers recorded two hits and two runs. Charlie Facemire and McLaughlin combined to allow four hits in three innings of scoreless relief.
Hancock recorded three hits, including a double, a run and an RBI in the earlier loss. Rodgers added a double and three RBIs.
Heath falls at home
Jamison Walsh singled and threw two scoreless innings of relief for Heath in a 9-1 loss to visiting Jonathan Alder.
Preston DeVito and Quentin Sunkle also singled for the Bulldogs (3-2).
